This month, was very busy. I’d forgotten how much work blogging regularly is. And there were the changes I made to the blog, (you can read more about those in my last post) as well as school and speech and debate tournaments, so I only read 5 ½ books. It isn’t a lot for me, but it’s enough to keep me on track for my reading goal of 75 books this year. The first book I read in January was Room for Hope by Kim Vogel Sawyer. I enjoyed the book, which is set in 1930’s Kansas. It follows the story of Neva Shilling as she realizes that her husband’s month-long travels were excuses for visits with his secret family. I gave the book 4 stars, and you can read my full review here.
The next book, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, is one that I actually didn’t finish. (This is the half book) I enjoyed the style of the writing, and the story was good, there is just so much cursing that it was difficult to finish. I wanted to keep reading, but I wasn’t sure if I should, and my mom didn’t think I should. I may pick it up again sometime in the future, but for now, it’s back on the shelf. The third book was The Boundless by Kenneth Oppel. I had high hopes for this one after reading Mr. Oppel’s Matt Cruse Series, (I reviewed the first book, Airborn, here) but I was kind of disappointed. It is a middle-grade novel about the first railroad across Canada. The characters seemed flat, and the story really wasn’t that exciting. I kind of enjoyed it, but it’s only worthy of 2.5 stars. The next book I read was The Abbess of Whitby by Jill Dalladay. This book took me the longest to read, almost 2 weeks. It was enjoyable, though. I gave it 4 stars. If you haven’t already done so, you can read my full review here. For the fifth book, I read Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. It is an exciting middle grade/young adult novel set in an alternative history at the start of WWI. I enjoyed it, it’s about 3.5-4 stars. I’ll probably post a review of it soon. The Final book I read was Grace and the Preacher by Kim Vogel Sawyer. Though not as good as Room for Hope by the same author, I enjoyed the story. It leaves a lot of room for improvement, though, so I only give it 3 stars. I will be posting a full review sometime this week, or next. I read enough books for one month I guess. I hope to read more in February, but I'm not sure that's going to happen. But I'll try. So long for now, Grace
