At the age of twenty-four, postmistress Grace Cristler has all but given up hope of finding a husband among the narrowing group of eligible men in her town of Fairland, Kansas. But then Grace is responsible for corresponding with the new preacher set to take his place. She can't deny the affection growing in her heart for the Reverand, a man she deeply admires but has only met through his letters. Theophil Garrison is on the run from the past and a label he's desperate to escape. 10 years ago, his outlaw cousins were part of a train robbery, but Theo fled the scene, leaving his cousins to face imprisonment. Now their sentence is complete, but the plan for vengeance has only just begun. A chance encounter could provide Theo with the escape he needs. But the young man's con might come at an enormous price for the entire town. Will God's mercy make something beautiful from the ashes of Theo's past? I think I’m slowly becoming a fan of Kim Vogel Sawyer. This is the third book of hers that I‘ve read (the second in January) and I have enjoyed all of them. This one, however, I didn’t enjoy as much as the other two. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, just not as much. The story starts out exciting. It creates suspense and drama. But from there, the story starts to drag a bit. The writing and dialogue are cheesy, as a lot of Christian fiction, but that’s not the problem. Everything is so dramatic, to the point of being overdramatic. The story is interesting, I just feel as though there is a lot of lost opportunity. As far as the characters go, they’re mostly well written. The perspective of Theophil Garrison, one of the 3 main characters is pretty well developed. So is the perspective of Bess. But Grace’s perspective seem’s a little flat and undeveloped. Because of this, she seems kind of annoying, and very overdramatic. One thing that I liked about the last two books I read by Kim Vogel Sawyer, is that they had a depth and message. This book had a bit of that, but really only at the end. And while there is nothing wrong with only reading a book for entertainment, (I do it all the time) this book just seems kind of like fun. It’s fun fluff to be sure, though. So if you’re in the mood for a cheesy hallmark movie type book, then you might like this. But if you’re looking for something that will make you think, then this might not be the book for you. I liked it, but it definitely leaves room for improvement, so I only give it 3.5 stars. Content Warning - CleanThe book does have some romance, but it's very clean. There is also a section that describes blood letting. It's not too graphic, just gross. I recieved this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
